Let me start by saying, I don’t believe all carbs are bad. I believe we are over consuming refined carbs and sugars. Our diets are full of hidden refined carbs and we need to be aware of those hidden carbs. And take steps to avoid as many as possible but cutting carbs can be difficult. Let me share with you easy ways to reduce carbs in your diet.
Eliminate Sugary Drinks
I personally, used to be a 2-3 bottles of cola per day. Just by eliminating the sugary drinks in my diet I was able to cut 100-150 carbs! That is a large amount of refined carbs that, let’s face it, we don’t really need. We may not want to drink water or we may think we need the sugary drink to get through the long afternoon but you we don’t. In fact, you will likely feel better and power though the afternoon easier without the carb crash that follows the carb high.
Cut Back on Bread
Bread seems to be a staple in everyone’s diet. But at approximately 15 grams of carbs per slice, you can see how easily you can overindulge and consume a lot of carbohydrates quickly. So although whole grain breads contain vitamins and minerals, if you are trying to reduce carbs in your diet it would be better to find low carb alternatives. If you are having a hard time giving up bread completely try one of these low carb bread recipes.
Choose Low Carb Snacks
If you are a big snacker consider changing what you snack on. In this house we have a big salt habit (and chocolate, yikes!!) so we tend to have a lot of chips and cracker type snacks kicking around. Really, some very high carb empty snacks. I exchanged the chips for pepperoni sticks. It was an easy exchange for me and it really helped reduce daily carbs. Find a low carb snack that you can enjoy.
Eat a Low Carb Breakfast
Eating breakfast is a good part of any healthy diet but so many breakfast foods are full of refined carbs. Cereal is not only high in refined carbohydrates, most are lacking any actual nutrients. Cut out the cereal and toast and replace it with a healthy omelette like this one and you will feel fuller and reduce carbs in your diet.
Eat Veggies Instead of Potatoes
Another way to easily reduce carbs in your diet is replace potatoes with more vegetables. We are a meat and potatoes family, I grew up in a meat and potatoes family, and the thought of not having potatoes or rice or some kind of starch with my supper was difficult to wrap my head around. So I started adding more veggies to my plate. Now, we have meat, vegetables and a salad for our main daily meal. It has helped reduce our daily carb intake.
Start Reading Food Labels
This is probably the quickest way to reduce carbs in your diet. Read the labels on the food you are consuming. Look at the amount of carbs and the amount of fiber, among other things and know what you are putting in your body. Become aware of the foods you eat and keep track of what high carb items you reach for. Then you can start looking for lower carb replacements for those items.
Making a few small changes to your daily diet can have a big impact on the amount of carbs you are consuming. Lowering your carb intake in your diet can help you deal with a myriad of health issues from weight issues to reducing chronic inflammation and pain.
