Holiday Eating and Inflammation
Yep it’s the holidays! A time of year when we all overload our plates and devour more goodies then we would normally allow ourselves. We may all deserve to indulge a little in our favorite holiday dishes and all the Christmas cookies but it is important to remember some foods cause inflammation and some foods help fight inflammation.
Inflammation happens naturally in our bodies to help clear up any problems and promote repairs. So when Inflammation is working properly it is a good thing in your body. However, chronic inflammation is not good at all! It can wreak havoc on your body in ways you likely did not even realize. Chronic inflammation can cause everything from allergies to cancer as well as joint and muscle pain. It is important to your health to try and reduce inflammation in your body.
Foods that Trigger Inflammation
There are certain foods that can trigger more inflammation in your body. So while we may enjoy these foods it is best to either avoid them completely or at the very least enjoy them in moderation. Here is a list of some of the worst inflammation causing foods.
- Processed or prepared foods are probably the worst ones on the list. This includes fast food, foods in boxes and basically anything that has ingredients you can’t pronounce. If it does not go bad it is bad for your body and will definitely cause some inflammation response. Avoid holiday favorites that come in a box, like stuffing.
- Refined sugar is also a big inflammation causing treat. And while you may think that artificial sweeteners are the answer, it is important to know they are also linked to many health problems. Better to just enjoy small amounts of sugary treats or look for natural sweet treats. During the holiday season stick to turkey and vegetables and enjoy a small piece of pie. Avoid over indulging in pop, Christmas baking and candies.
- Alcohol is another cause of inflammation and over the holidays we tend to consume a little more then normal. Alcohol is not only high in sugar but it is also hard on your liver. Try to avoid over consumption during the holidays, your body will thank you in the new year!
Foods that Reduce Inflammation
These foods may cause inflammation but other foods can help reduce inflammation. So be sure to add as many of these foods as possible to your holiday eating to help combat the inflammation in your body. Here is a list of a few top anti inflammatory foods.
- Herbs like basil, oregano, parsley and rosemary are easy to incorporate into your holiday cooking and can be helpful in reducing inflammation.

- Set out bowls of almonds, walnuts and Brazil nuts when you are laying out the Christmas goodies. Snacking on these can have an effect on any access inflammation.
